New e-Zero FIR: The new e-Zero FIR initiative has been launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, while announcing this initiative, has called it a historic step to tackle cyber crimes. The aim of this initiative is to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Cyber Safe India’ by taking immediate action on cyber financial crimes.
What is e-Zero FIR initiative?
This is a new system that automatically converts complaints of cyber financial crimes lodged on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) or cyber helpline number 1930 into Zero FIR. Initially, this facility will be applicable to financial frauds of more than ₹10 lakh. This initiative has currently started as a pilot project in Delhi and will soon be implemented across the country.
Zero FIR means that any person can lodge a complaint in any police station from any place in the country, without the constraint of geographical boundary.Under this, the complainant has to convert this Zero FIR into a regular FIR by going to the cyber crime police station within 3 days. This system is especially helpful for those who have lost money in cyber crime – now they will not have to run from police station to police station.

How does the new system work?
This new system is a joint initiative of three main institutions, Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C), Delhi Police’s e-FIR system, and CCTNS network of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Under this, when a complaint is received, it will be automatically sent to Delhi’s e-Crime Police Station and then it will be transferred to the local cyber police station.
Why e-Zero FIR was launched:
- To reduce the time from complaint to filing of FIR
- To speed up the recovery of money lost due to fraud
- To ensure strict action against cyber criminals
- To strengthen the cyber security grid, so that the dream of ‘Cyber Secure Bharat’ can be realised.
Under which law was it brought?
This entire process has been implemented under Section 173 (1) and 1(ii) of the Indian Civil Security Code (Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita – BNSS). Through this, filing and transferring FIR through digital medium has been made legally valid. The e-Zero FIR initiative is a good step towards providing quick justice to cyber crime victims. It not only makes the process of filing complaints easier, but will also prove helpful in recovering the money lost due to fraud. If this model is successful, it will help the country in the field of cyber crime control.
Final conclusion:-
The e-Zero FIR system is a groundbreaking initiative by the Ministry of Home Affairs to combat rising cyber financial crimes in India. By automatically converting complaints of cyber fraud above ₹10 lakh into Zero FIRs through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal or helpline 1930, this system ensures swift action and removes geographical barriers in the FIR lodging process. Initially launched as a pilot project in Delhi, it represents a major step toward a ‘Cyber Safe India’ envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With the integration of I4C, Delhi Police’s e-FIR system, and NCRB’s CCTNS network, this initiative will significantly improve cybercrime response efficiency and reduce the burden on victims, offering a seamless path from complaint to investigation.
